A Biblical Timeline Chart Offers A Graphic Way To Help Teach Biblical Events And Characters And Principles

In our Bible study some years ago, a woman who had been a Christian and been involved in the Church for years, asserted that,"Yes, but Abraham had the Law and so he understood about......" (they were not talking about the pre-Moses law) I wonder how many Christians will actually pick up the error in this statement. Moses came about some 500 years after Abraham and so it is impossible. I have since compiled a Biblical history timeline and shown in a more graphic way the time period of people and occasions.

Unfortunately, a numerous preachers and Bible teachers in our churches continue to preach flimsy, superficial, shallow, light weight sermons and their members barely grow in biblical knowledge and understanding. Preachers love to preach moral essays and warming affirmations because supposedly, if we truly love our people this is what we will do. Unfortunate it seems, if the people of God are falling through the cracks in the absence of knowledge as long as we are positive and loving to all. In truth, the more relevant we become to the world, the less relevant we are to the world.

Some time ago, I was speaking on the resurrection, burial, death and life of Jesus, and a retired pastor and powerful preacher of the Bible, who had been a pastor for forty years, came to me and reproved me smartly over some interesting points I made and he remarked 1Ti 1:4 Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith, so do. I quietly asked him if I was saying anything of a heretical nature at all, to which he replied No. I continued on to spell out that in the case of that particular Scripture, it was not speaking to exploring the Bible but to the false teaching and philosophy of the Gnostics, but he would not accept it.

Let me ask, how can a 40 year preacher & laborer in the Gospel, not know and understand about something that possibly 1/2 the books of the New Testament relate to? How can he study and teach the Bible fully without being aware of something that was so influential in the New Testament church? And then how can the congregation hope to figure out these things and be in a position to interpret their Bible well if they are not told?

Why do we get stuck in a rut of favorite subjects and feel-good sermons?
We preach on a text from Mark and a passage about Jacob and a topical from the book of Psalms and then the obedience of David or the fleece of Gideon - parts from here and there, but we do not put it all at once in a clear understandable, easy to remember, perspective with a decent Bible TimeLine and Church History as well. Constantly we are bombarded with new books, modernist ideas, a number of them perilously leaning toward Liberal theology, when if we were to be coached the basics of Church History, we then would not be so doomed to relive it.

Let us as teachers and preachers sew together the fragments of the Word and plan of God into a seamless tapestry that our people are able to draw on for the rest of life, helping them to understand God, His Eternal Plan, the role of the Church and how to better interpret the Bible to live by.
It is not difficult to do, and it is not boring if we are ready to put in a bit of study from prayer and fervor, and just maybe you can make use of a Bible Timeline too.
